O'Neill Sea Odyssey

“The physical and biological patterns of a place are imprinted on the mind so the ‘cognition, personality, creativity, and maturity-all are some way tied to particular gestalts of space. Knowledge of place where you are and where you come from is intertwined with knowledge of who you are. Landscape shapes mindscape.’” In turn, “Identity building- experience in place helps us become aware of how we ourselves are part of the web of life, we become aware of how we are embedded in an ecosystem.” (Place and Pedagogy, David Orr and Paul Shepard et al.) The ‘classroom ecosystem’ onboard an off during the day with OSO encourages students to work together within the context of the landscape they are learning about. In this way, they learn about themselves as members of larger systems, both human and environmental.
