Snares are something we don't hear about often or pay attention to, yet as simple as they are - they are indeed amongst the highest killers of wildlife in Africa.
A snare is a rudimentary piece of wire, shaped into a loop, anchored down and placed in an area of high animal activity with the sole purpose of killing wildlife. They are mostly used to catch bushmeat, often as a means of sustenance for rural communities, but their impact is huge.

If you speak to rangers and anti-poaching units all over Africa, they will tell you that a lot of their time and energy is focussed on the removal of snares; snares which maim and kill tens of thousands of animals a year.

The snaring problem is a problem as big as the poaching of rhino and elephant across the continent, and one of the factors contributing to the extinction of species.
I have seen both a lion and elephant snared and in terrible condition. The lion survived but the elephant had to be put down.
When we think about poaching, and when we think about wildlife and conservation, we need to realise that every species plays an important role. When one starts to understand this and starts to grasp how many animals are dying from snares across the continent every day, week, month and year - then one will start to understand the real horror of snares.

A huge thanks to @liangbo1999 for sharing these 3 amazing photos with us of Lewa's cheetah brothers. The top photo is them playing as cubs in 2012, the middle is them marking their territory in 2015 and the bottom photo is the two brothers stalking (and shortly after, successfully hunting) a zebra just yesterday. Amazing to see how they've grown over the years to become such a formidable pair #cheetahs #lewa #lewawilderness #thehunt #conservation #successstory #bigcats #bigcatsofinstagram #cheetah #safari #onsafari #onlyinkenya

In my last post I mentioned the risk of stereotypic and aggressive behaviours in captive and semi-captive animals. I also briefly mentioned the idea of enrichment, the main way for carers to prevent animals developing these abnormal behaviours. .
.
While in captivity, animals will experience the same routine and surroundings every day and are usually fed so do not have to work for food. This limits their ability to forage, hunt, explore new scents, interact with the signs of other species, and can just lead to boredom and frustration. Enrichment is a way for carers to provide captive animals with stimulation that encourages them to exhibit their natural behaviours. This can come in many forms such as EEDs (environmental enrichment devices such as toys, climbing frames, puzzles), environmental enrichment (changing something within the animals environment), sensory enrichment (offering new scents for the animal to explore), food enrichment (offering new foods or making feeding time a challenge), or social enrichment (introducing animals to other species or new members of the same species) to name a few. .
.
In this image we are giving some cheetahs a form of food enrichment. Their usual meat has been hidden in these papier-mâché animals and they must follow the scent and find their meat. This encourages them to use tracking and hunting behaviours that they cannot usually use in captivity. Not only does this ensure that they don't lose these behaviours, it also keeps their minds active and prevents boredom and frustration.

Sometimes we fall, sometimes we stand tall, sometimes fail, sometimes we succeed, sometimes we change & sometimes we stick to our instincts, but there lies a unparallel magic in jungle, that ought teach us a lesson of lifetime

Leopard in the grass—a total surprise, this female leapt out at us on the road in Savute. In a flash, she grabbed a tree squirrel & devoured it in a nearby tree, then crept back down & rested before hunting for more dinner. She passed right next to our jeep & gave me quite a tingly spine as she stared into my eyes. #animals #savute #africa #andbeyond #travel #leopard #chobe #cats #bigcats #cat #wildlife #botswana @andbeyondtravel
