#Repost @franslanting (@get_repost)

from @FransLanting “The Ivory Game” I’m on my way to the Southern Ocean and we'll share more about the amazing wildlife we'll encounter there, but today we want to draw your attention to an important new documentary that is available to view now on Netflix. “ The Ivory Game,” produced by LeonardoDiCaprio, is a hard-hitting exposé that goes inside the illegal ivory trade to put Africa’s elephant poaching crisis back on the global agenda. Right now, the fate of Africa's elephants depends too much on the efforts of courageous individuals and small embattled groups scattered across the globe. They can’t do it without more support. We all have to raise our voices and get engaged. Organizations that support the elephant cause in a big way include the World Wildlife Fund, Wild Aid, and Save The Elephants. Please check their websites, check out the DiCaprio film and spread the word. I made this elephant image in Botswana, which is one of the few countries in the world where elephants have found a safe haven and are doing well, thanks to the leadership of the Botswana government. Stay tuned for more images and stories from #TheIvoryGame #Elephants #Botswana #PoachingCrisis #Ivory #SaveTheElephants #wild_net #WorldWildlife #WildAid

Photo by @FransLanting A newborn chimp baby lies cradled on her mother’s chest. To be this close to wild chimpanzees requires trust. It took us several weeks of following one group of chimps on foot in a remote part of Senegal before they felt comfortable enough with us to allow this proximity. The day I made this photo was a breakthrough: The little chimp and her mom both dozed off in front of us—less than 60 feet away. Chimps and bonobos are our nearest relatives on the great tree of life, but we’re not treating them like family—they are all endangered. Habitat loss and the bushmeat trade are impacting their lives wherever they occur in west and central Africa. We urge you to support the organizations that are trying to make a difference, including the World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, the Jane Goodall Institute, and Neighbor Ape, founded by primatologist Jill Pruetz, to whom we say thank you for all her work with the chimps in Senegal.

We urge you to support the organizations that are trying to make a difference, including the World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, the Jane Goodall Institute, and Neighbor Ape, founded by primatologist Jill Pruetz, an Emerging Explorer for National Geographic with whom we worked on assignment for @natgeo. And we encourage you to visit chimps in the wild, if you have the opportunity—at places like Mahale and Gombe in Tanzania or Kibale in Uganda, among others. Money earned through chimpanzee tourism provides funds for conservation projects and brings jobs and other benefits to local communities. Follow me @FransLanting for more stories of great apes in the wild.
