The Adam Webster Memorial Fund was founded by Tom and Judy Webster when their son Adam passed away in 1999. It provides the OSO program for cognitively and physically challenged individuals and has touched the lives of over 500 people including its students, teachers, and donors. In August 2009, OSO’s Adam Webster Memorial Fund received the Community Spinners award from the Special Parents Information Network for its work with special needs youth. We are so grateful both for the support we receive from and also for the support we are able to provide because of the Adam Webster Fund, in continuing to create ocean stewards out of the unique opportunity that is OSO.

Been part of the O'Neill Sea Odyssey family for 15 years. Lifestyle on the water is the best style! But even more awesome is that Jack O'Neill's passion project is about to celebrate its 100,000th student aboard the O'Cat this coming year. That means nearly 100,000 kids have voyaged the sea and learned about ocean conservation and her majestic creatures. From the boat to the lab, each class takes and analyzes a sample of plankton in order to see how important they are to the Monterey Bay ecosystem. These tiny organisms are the start of the food chain and rely on clean, pollutant free waters. Zooplankton feed on phytoplankton and then get eaten by bigger organisms. Because of nutrient upwelling the Monterey Bay is one of the most productive ecosystems in the world, this is why it needs protecting. Phytoplankton produce 50% of our oxygen! In the 5th photo we see a copepod surrounded by pseudonitzia, in the 6th we see a baby jellyfish and in the 7th we see some fish eggs and a hydroid polyp! Each #plankton serves it's own purpose in the ocean food web!

The ocean is alive! At the biology station on board, students collect a sample of plankton and record environmental data. Although they won't be able to see these tiny creatures until back in the classroom under a microsope, students come to understand why plankton is the most important link in the oceanic food chain. Here, they begin to make the connection between ocean water quality and the importance of sustaining intricate food webs. This is one of the collected samples from our very own Monterey Bay. Go plankton!

After their trip on the boat, the students come into our classroom for three additional lessons. At the shoreside marine ecology station, the kids get to see how pesticides, fertilizers, plastics, oil and other pollutants move from land into the ocean through our watershed model. After creating a rain storm with spray bottles and seeing how polluted the ocean gets from runoff, our instructors then discuss how to limit their impact by carpooling, recycling and other methods to keep the ocean life thriving! We also show an actual sample of plastic from the Great Pacific garbage patch so the students see how the plastic degrades.

Our grand prize winner for our Ocean Steward Art Contest is Yoltzin Delgado and her piece “Save the Marine Life" from @bouldercreekschool! In the piece we see the negative impacts of ocean pollution and large-scale trawler fishing as compared to an ocean where marine life is thriving. Conveyed beautifully, Yoltzin shows how individual choices result in very different environmental outcomes. As this year's winner, she and her teacher will each receive family passes for a sail on the Team O’Neill catamaran! Check out the blog post for more on the drawings and contest, link in bio!

A big problem in our contemporary education system is the exclusion of place and what the students experience in that place. “What passes for knowledge is little more than abstraction piled on top of abstraction, disconnected from tangible experience, real problems, and the places where we live and work..There [must be] coordination of senses and thought, and also a reciprocal influence between brain activity and material creative activity." Learning in the field makes it more likely for the student to grow into a steward of the environment and understand the needs of their place. The time spent on board the O’Neill Sea Odyssey is providing exactly this tangible experience for students all around Santa Cruz county and the central coast. Here, students feel a sea-otter’s pelt and understand its value in history and the reason for why we preserve and protect their habitat today. Quote from the book "Ecological Literacy: Education and the Transition to a Postmodern World"

Thousands of surfers paddled out from a Santa Cruz beach into the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary last Sunday to honor Jack O’Neill with many thousands more watching from the cliffs around Jack’s house overlooking Pleasure Point. It was a moving tribute to the man who was a pioneer of the wetsuit, which enabled many millions of people to plunge into the ocean to experience our blue planet for themselves. Jack passed away recently at the age of 94 after a life well lived. Many of us in Santa Cruz were touched by his spirit and scores of kids benefitted from his efforts to advance the cause of ocean education. Thank you fellow Santa Cruzans for coming together. Video by @FransLanting with @ChristineEckstrom and @Gilholmer Tap the screen for sound.
