Museum exhibitions take an enormous amount of work to produce—and none of that work is seen by the audience when they enter the gallery. Unless, of course, you’re at the Guggenheim. Just as there is nowhere quite like Frank Lloyd Wright’s bright, open rotunda to enjoy art, there is nowhere like it to put together an exhibition. Illustrator Joana Avillez (@joanaavillez) came by to draw this fascinating process in action—see more at guggenheim.org/blogs. #FrankLloydWrightFridays

Final day! #MaurizioCattelan: "America," a fully functional 18-karat gold toilet available for use in one of our gender-neutral restrooms closes at the Guggenheim today. Cattelan’s “America,” like all his greatest work, is at once humorous and searing in its critique of our current realities. Cattelan has stated that this is the “one-percent art for the ninety-nine percent," though prefers to allow the audience to interpret the work.

On the 16th anniversary of #September11, we look back at composer Arvo Pärt and architectural firm @snohetta's tribute "To a Great City" at 7 World Trade Center, part of our 2011 "stillspotting nyc" project. Visitors were able to experience this confluence of music and architecture at five separate locations in lower Manhattan that quietly celebrated the city, ten years after the September 11 attacks. Traveling through stillspots along the periphery of Ground Zero, participants encountered a green labyrinth created by the Battery Conservancy, reflected in an underground chamber at Governors Island National Monument, and entered otherwise inaccessible spaces in landmark skyscrapers. The stillness and seclusion of these spaces heightened awareness and recalibrated the senses. Listeners become increasingly sensitized as they were drawn in and transformed to a focused and tranquil state. Learn more at stillspotting.guggenheim.org.

“When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes a machine that makes the art”— #SolLeWitt, born on this date in 1928. LeWitt’s "Wall Drawing #146" (1972), from our collection, exemplifies his idea that the systems shaping the object become the work itself and the object becomes an optional by-product. By leaving only the instruction “all two-part combinations of blue arcs from corners and sides and blue straight, not straight and broken lines” the look of the drawing is shaped by the architecture of the site, the size of the wall, and the individual or individuals producing the drawing.

Peggy Guggenheim relocated to Venice and displayed her collection in the 1948 Biennale, helping to re-establish the institution after World War II. Many of the artists she championed had never before been exhibited in the Giardini, and one pavilion that year was specifically dedicated to artists discredited by the Nazis. In 1949, Peggy acquired the 18th-century Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal to house her art and became one of the city's most celebrated patrons and eccentrics. In 1976, she donated her collection to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. #GuggVisionaries #PeggyGuggenheim
