And creating a better world is no small feat right now. Please join us—both at the festival, May 25-28, and in whatever way you can to bring about compassion and change.

After completing a number of bold first ascents and free solos at her home base in Squamish, rock climber Brette Harrington expands her range on a yearlong international journey, ascending big walls in Yosemite and free soloing in Patagonia. Her endeavors are chronicled in the film "Brette," part of the Reel Rock 11 collection from @senderfilms. “It’s so exciting finding your own way up and solving puzzles along the way,” Brette explains with the same casual, undaunted and bubbly nature that she employs to tackle brand-new disciplines and some of the West’s rowdiest lines.

Rebecca Rusch (@rebeccarusch) has won numerous championships in ultra-endurance mountain bike races. In "Blood Road," she undertakes another kind of endurance challenge on two wheels, covering 1,200 miles of the fabled Ho Chi Minh Trail in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and stopping at the obscure site in the jungle where her father’s plane crashed in 1972 during the Vietnam War. Rusch, who was 3 when her father disappeared, is joined by Vietnamese professional cyclist Huyen Nguyen. For both women, the trek is not only a difficult expedition across often-uncharted and rugged mountain and jungle terrain but also an investigation into the war that scarred both of their families, the people who lived and still live nearby, and the land along the trail. You can watch the film through iTunes, Vimeo on Demand or Amazon.

"Reduction or mitigation is like asking, 'Humanity, you’re going down the wrong road. Can you slow down?' It doesn’t change the road you’re going on. It just changes the rate at which you’re going down the wrong road. It seemed to me that we needed a new meme and that should be reversal, from reduction to reversal. That's what drawdown is about."

Rabbits are a byproduct of the highly industrialized sugar cane plantations of the Florida Everglades. (Who knew?) And when the critters flee mechanical harvests and field burnings, they're hunted by nearby residents. "The Rabbit Hunt," a short verite film directed by Patrick Bresnan, chronicles one family’s hunt, offering a glimpse into a modern and urban twist on subsistence. (The film is currently making the circuit at festivals around the world. Check out @TheRbbitHunt on Facebook to see where it's screening next.) Photo: from the film "The Rabbit Hunt"

There's never going to be another mission quite like it. In 1977, NASA sent two Voyager probes into deep space just in time for a historic alignment that allowed them to make a successful exploration of the outer planets of our solar system. It was the beginning of an incredible fact-finding mission and interstellar journey. The Voyager probes finally get the treatment they deserve in "The Farthest," which rounds up the hyper-intelligent pack of scientists involved with the mission 40 years later to recount the audacious project. It’s a film filled with boundless human ingenuity, the endless lure of the unknown, the unfathomable distance and mystery of space, and one unforgettable golden record. Buckle up for a dazzling ride because "The Farthest" is being released in the U.S. this month!
August 11-18 at Cinema Village in New York
August 11-18 in Laemmele Playhouse in Los Angeles

Professional skier Stan Rey (@stanrey7) has driven the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99) between Whistler and Vancouver, British Columbia, countless times since he was a kid, always intrigued by the imposing silhouette of the Tantalus Range in the distance. It was on this stretch of winding, coastal highway that his sister had a devastating car accident, so skiing took a backseat for Rey as he tended to his sister’s recovery. But little by little, skiing provided an escape. The film "The Highway" is an emotional story about not taking anything for granted and, finally, pulling off a bucket-list dream. Watch it in its entirety (15 minutes) on YouTube.

Many of us dream of taking leave of the daily grind and heading out into the great unknown. For some, that may be the desert, others a dusty road or winding river, but for Nico Edwards, the director and a character in "Sea Gypsies: The Far Side of the World," it was the ocean.
After deciding to check out of society for a while, he found passage as a crew member on a boat called Infinity, which set sail from Australia to Patagonia via some of the planet’s roughest waters in the Ross Sea. A Mountainfilm Commitment grantee, this film manages to be smart and thoughtful, yet fun and rollicking at the same time. It documents a tremendous journey, showing what it takes—mentally, physically and nautically—to take on this kind of wild adventure. And as of today, you can stream "Sea Gypsies" via iTunes.

We made @moviemakermag's list of the world's 25 coolest film festivals! "Some festivals preach to their respective choirs, but others, such as Mountainfilm, integrate a fine mix of documentary cinema that engages the whole viewer spectrum. 'This is a one-of-a-kind film festival for adventure lovers and environmental film enthusiasts,” opined one of our panelists. … The festival has been championing films that address environmental issues since 1979, and has grown through a well-curated mix of human interest and environmental outreach. It counts author @cherylstrayed as a regular speaker, along with a monumental lineup of filmmakers and environmental advocates." #Telluride #Mountainfilm #thebestfestivalever #documentaryfilm #filmfestival #festival

In Chasing Coral, director Jeff Orlowski and a team of scientists, photographers and divers set out to document the underwater crisis as warming ocean temperatures trigger unprecedented rates of coral bleaching and dying. It’s no easy task, and the team faces technical challenges, the whims of nature and the ticking clock as it races to record bleaching events as they happen. The film pairs beauty and urgency with a glimpse of the tragedies that will continue if humans don’t address climate change. The film, which screened at Mountainfilm 2017, was just released on Netflix and is well worth adding to the top of your movie queue. Or, even better, catch it on the big screen at Aspen's Wheeler Opera House (@wheeleropera) where Mountainfilm on Tour will screen "Chasing Coral" as part of a multi-day event, August 23-27. Bonus: Director Jeff Orlowski and Zack Rago, who is featured in the film, will be there!

It’s as easy as falling off a log. Except that it’s not falling—you actually have to take a conscious step. From better than 30 feet up. Into thin air. Followed by a plummet into deep water. Still, it’s only a simple step. It's interesting to see who can—and, mostly, who cannot—take that “simple” step in the film "Ten Meter Tower." Watch this short film (16 minutes) in its entirety on YouTube, and tell us: Would you jump?

There's a cliche you sometimes hear around ski towns that goes something like, "I came here for the winters, but I stayed for the summers." While some of our staff explores far-flung locales for much-needed, post-festival R & R, the Mountainfilm on Tour department gets no such break. @crystalxcrush, @seebunch and @naanisheva are selecting films from the 2017 festival that will travel with Mountainfilm on Tour and Mountainfilm for Students (as well as securing film licensing, creating marketing materials, and working with tour hosts and schools to bring the show on the road). We'll soon release the official list of films that will travel with the tour, and, while the cinematic possibilities aren't quite as infinite as the universe, we will screen awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping programs for audiences all over the world. Stay tuned—#mountainfilmtour is coming your way!

Today, @natgeo published an in-depth story of Mauli Dhan, the cliff-climbing hallucinogenic honey gatherer in Nepal whose life was documented in the film "The Last Honey Hunter" (which premiered at Mountainfilm this year). I was spellbound when I saw the multicolored tentacles wave from the pin-striped bell of this extraordinary flower hat jelly, a drifter in sea currents which also spends time moving along the ocean floor. The ancestors of jellies were among the first animals whose bodies exhibited an organized architecture, with groups of cells joined together as tissues that performed unified functions.
This is one of the signature images for my project “LIFE: A Journey Through Time,” a lyrical interpretation of the story of life on Earth from the Big Bang to the present.
