Not really, but that Ammonite behind the sticker sure is. Our Geology 20 students studied and saw so many Cretaceous rocks (144-66 million yrs) in the spring semester 2017, the phrase became contagious. One of my students drew this design for me. Notice the record, the rock hammer, the guitar and the mountains. All things that are near and dear to me. Thank you Katrina and Geology 20 students; you rock! #fossils #ammonites #geology #outdoors #mountains #cabrillo #guitars #rockhammer

The summer beach profile is back. This picture was taken in late August just east of 26 Ave stairs, looking east toward Moran Lake Beach. Oceanography students at Cabrillo College have been surveying these beaches since 1988. The high wide berm and steep beach face will eventually evolve into a low lying gently sloping foreshore, as a result of erosion from high energy winter waves, coming soon to Santa Cruz. #beach #seasons #oceanography #cabrillocollege #waves #survey #surf #storm #cycles #erosion

My fountain with two beautiful striped calc-silicate Hornfels of Horse Creek. They are Triassic in age (251-208) and are rich in epidote and plagioclase. They likely formed when volcanoes erupted on an island arc and the ash settled into freshwater lakes. The mixed sediment lithified, and the island arcs eventually docked onto California. Millions of years later the rocks were uplifted, exposed and moved down Lundy Creek, deposited near Mono Lake for all of us to enjoy! #epidote #metamorphic #rockcycle #lundycanyon #basinandrange #leevining #platetectonics

Grad school days, early 1980's. My close friend Rich Rasch (7/13/55 - 8/16/2008) with me after a days work at Moss Landing Marine Labs. Rich's thesis covered the origin and distribution of phosphorites along the central California outer continental margin. He was a talented researcher, but ended up having another successful career for over 20 years as a general contractor in Cleveland Ohio. Love you Rich. Miss you. #geology #the80s #cleveland #rememberwhen #oceanography #graduateschool

We visited Edgewater Park, west side Cleveland Ohio. Some of the sand is natural, rich in silicates and shell fragments. Some of the Sand is imported. Warm, clean fresh water; Lake Erie temperature 75 degrees, air temperature 85 degrees. Very nice! #beachsand #greatlakes #lakeerie #cleveland #ohio

This man is climbing the Monolith at the Pinnacles National Park, located in the central Coast Range of California. The monolith is a volcanic clast, a transported fragment of the earths crust. The monolith fell into a steep river cut gorge millions of years ago and has become part of the talus caves found in the upper Bear Gulch Canyon. The Monolith is composed of Rhyolite Breccia, a volcanic rock that formed 23.5 million years ago ~314 Km to the south. #pinnaclesnationalpark #geology #cabrillocollege #sanandreasfault #outdoorfun #rockclimbing

Historical Geology 20 students study the oldest rocks in the Sierra Nevada, banded radiolarian chert ~320 – 350 million years old exposed in the northwest Sierra about 10 miles outside Yosemite National Park, along Highway 140. The steep “Chevron Folds” result from tectonic collisions and docking events that occurred in western North America in the later Paleozoic, and throughout the Mesozoic Era. Come study the Yosemite region with Cabrillo College Geology – fun! #geology #sierranevada #outdoorfun #camping #tuolumnemeadows #leevining

The world’s oceans are in trouble. In January 2017, staff members and students from #CleanOceansInternational
went to #Cuba to survey trash on local beaches and raise awareness about plastic debris in the world’s oceans. We made contacts for future work and found Cubans to be very warm, hospitable and welcoming. Let’s all pitch in to help raise awareness of this global problem. Let’s stop plastics and trash from entering the world’s oceans we care so much about. #havanacuba #greatgarbagepatch #marinedebris #aplasticocean #microplastics

Thank you Jack O’Neill (3/27/23 – 6/2/17). He is mostly known as a business man, wet suit & surfing pioneer, but Jack O’Neill also cared deeply about the marine environment and in 1996, founded The O’Neill Sea Odyssey. The O'Neill Sea Odyssey program provides a hands-on educational experience to encourage the protection and preservation of the world’s oceans, focusing on marine science, marine and watershed ecology, and marine navigation. Over 100,000 students, mostly 4th – 6th graders have gone out to sea on the O’Neill Catamaran to experience and study the ocean environment. Cabrillo College Oceanography students also participated with the program for ~8 years and have always been proud to be part of this extremely worthwhile and ambitious program. http://oneillseaodyssey.org/ #oneillseaodyssey #oneillwetsuits #marineecology #protecttheoceans #jackoneill #surfing #oceanography #wetsuits

Let's celebrate the amazing silicon oxygen tetrahedra, the building block of the earths crust and mantle. It's an incredible ion with so many possibilities. Many geologists like me think about them all the time. It can occur as a single tetrahedron or double isolated, or as single and double chains, rings, sheets and complex 3 dimensional structures. Most people don't think about the ion, but we're never very far from millions of them. #siliconoxygentetrahedra #silicates #geology #tetrahedron #molecules #earthcrust #elements

Alvin loves the beach, and one of his favorite things to do is chase his tail on the sand. The beach sand in Santa Cruz California consists of variable amounts of quartz, orthoclase, plagioclase, biotite, hornblende, clay minerals, chert, volcanic and granitic clasts, shell fragments and more. All are typical components of the local bedrock in the Santa Cruz Mountains and part of the northern Monterey Bay coastal circulation cell. For more on the geology of Santa Cruz and the Monterey Bay region, enroll in Geology 10 or 20 @ Cabrillo College. Fun! #dogs #sand #mineralogy #physicalgeology #historicalgeology
