“Recent developments have been drawing people to the (Lafayette) neighborhood. The nice thing is you can build stuff, but when you actually see people using it, it’s beautiful.
One of the things (the Morris Canal Community Development Corporation) has done, since starting out as a grassroots, is we meet with the community every single month. We educate and we share any developments that are going on in the neighborhood. It’s helped the dialogue and relationships too; not only with developers, but also with the city as well.
Berry Lane Park was an opportunity for us to serve a contaminated land in our neighborhood. When you drive past the park on a Saturday, every portion of the park is being used. We’re looking forward to more growth, the completion of the neighborhood. There are so many projects slated. Just the past few years, we’ve had so many businesses open.
Our redevelopment plan is the first that we have been able to document in the state of New Jersey to have their organization written into the plan. The important component of that is we have a community empowerment piece. That spells out the relationships and the notifications. It helps keep the lines of communication open with the city.
I was born and raised here. When the railroad left, so did a lot of the industrial businesses. That left a lot of vacant buildings. Lafayette used to be a thriving neighborhood when I was growing up. We’re trying to get back there. It’s been a good journey. The outcome seems to be positive. I’m really happy. When you’re a normal resident living in the neighborhood and can participate and make things happen, there’s so much gratification in that. When people see that there are actually things happening, you get more participation. I can’t wait to see it all completed and looking for more adventures in the neighborhood.”

#Throwback to the early 1900s and the Whitlock Cordage Company in the Morris Canal area of Bergen-Lafayette. Whitlock manufactured rope and cables, primarily for the maritime industry.

This week, the Fulop Administration announced it had revitalized plans to build residential housing at the site - an initiative that stalled for more than a decade by prior administrations. Under the Fulop plan, the site will be 330 units, with 70 percent for low and moderate income to continue provide quality market rate and affordable housing for residents.

"We're celebrating National Farmers Market Week, so we're giving away a free donut peach to our customers. It's very important for us to be here in #JerseyCity because everything is fresh picked the night before. All the fruits and vegetables are non-GMO. This is what makes us different than the supermarkets. Not everything is organic, but it's non-GMO, sustainably grown. We grow more than 240 varieties of fruits and vegetables. This is the peak time of year. We have all different kinds of peppers, different kinds of tomatoes, the raw honey and we have home-baked donuts and pies.
It gets really busy after 5pm, because all the people get off of work. They stop by here from the PATH. They're very happy we're here. I've heard from many people that it tastes so much better, because it's fresh." ~ Ayten Karmdzhi, Alstede Farms, Journal Square Farmers' Market

#Throwback to an early 20th century postcard of the Curries Woods area in the southernmost part of Jersey City's Greenville neighborhood. It was named for James Currie (1800-1870), a prominent #JerseyCity resident who served on the first Township Committee of Greenville in 1863 and owned about 100 acres in the area, which included the Currie homestead and surrounding farmlands.

Today, Jersey City is the second largest city in the state, and the Fulop administration has grown the city's focus on health and proudly boasts at least one farmers market every day of the week. So, join us this week at one of our markets and support local small businesses in the community!
