#Regram #RG @nrdc_org: For archaeologist Angel Peña and his community, the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument is a local treasure with something for everyone, whether it’s family trips, geological discoveries, or off-roading. As Trump and his administration are planning to weaken, shrink, or eliminate dozens of America’s national monuments like this one, NRDC and Next 100 Coalition have teamed up to make sure this doesn’t happen. #Regram #RG @oceana: A southern resident killer whale calf swims beside its mother through the Haro Strait. Unfortunately, sightings of these endangered marine species are becoming increasingly rare. A recent study in the journal PLOS ONE found that as high as 69 percent of Southern Resident killer whale pregnancies end in failure. What's to blame? The truth is that humans are wiping out most of the whale's food supply. Visit OCEANA.org/blog to learn how these endangered whales are careening towards extinction, and why scientists believe they might have found a solution that offers a glimmer of hope. 📷: Monika Wieland Shields

If the parks and reserves of Africa’s savannas were properly resourced and effectively managed, we could have 3-4 times the number of lions we have today. Today on #WorldLionDay, @LeonardoDiCaprioFdn and @WildNetOrg are launching a powerful coalition for #lionconservation--the @LionRecovery Fund. Find out more at lionrecoveryfund.org.

These protected areas are gifts from nature that belong to all of us, now and for future generations. #Regram #RG @sea_legacy: Overnight, a thin layer of ice forms on the surface of the sea surrounding Spitsbergen, Norway. By end of day, the ice will melt. It seemed like a pretty good ice year but in reality, it was thin and will soon disappear. What we saw very little of was multi-year ice. That is ice that lasts for many years and is crucial to all the species in this ecosystem. ⠀

#Regram #RG @franslanting: Beyond the National Parks and National Monuments we’re all familiar with, there are scores of other public lands in the USA that are administered by the Department of the Interior. The Bureau of Land Management is charged with looking after many millions of acres of wilderness areas, but it barely has the resources to do so. And that is before the cutbacks that are now being contemplated in Washington, D.C. Here’s one amazing place I discovered while doing an aerial survey of the Colorado Plateau on assignment for @NatGeo. It’s called the San Rafael Swell and it’s located in central Utah. It’s full of shale rock and that means there may be oil and gas deposits underneath the surface. Imagine what this landscape would like with access roads for mineral extraction. Become part of the conversation if you care and check some of the links below and follow me @FransLanting for more coverage of these special places.

Grateful for all who came out to the @LeonardoDiCaprioFdn Gala & contributed to our efforts to protect the planet. This past year LDF and its partners made a measurable difference. We helped protect more than 1.6 million square kilometers of ocean – an area more than twice the size of Texas – including the creation of the largest marine reserve in the world in Antarctica's Ross Sea. We are also supporting efforts to bring back the jaguar and the Mexican Gray Wolf - now 32 wolf packs have returned to the Pacific Northwest! In Tanzania our partner has restored the wildlife of Mkomazi national park, and in the grasslands of Kenya, where we are helping jump start an important carbon sequestration project. These are just a few of the stories about the impact the generosity of our donors has helped make possible. Click the link in bio to get involved.

#Regram #RG @unfccc: The Earth’s climate is changing at a rate that has exceeded most scientific forecasts. Some families and communities have already started to suffer from disasters and the consequences of climate change, forced to leave their homes in search of a new beginning.
For the UN refugee agency UNHCR, the consequences of climate change are enormous. Scarce natural resources such as drinking water are likely to become even more limited. Many crops and some livestock are unlikely to survive in certain locations if conditions become too hot and dry, or too cold and wet. Food security, already a concern, will become even more challenging.
Climate change will fuel forced migration. We all need to prepare, in a coordinated way, and to protect the most vulnerable.

Palm oil companies have cleared and continue to clear some of the most critical landscapes in the world to make room for their crops. In the process, they are destroying critical ecosystems and threatening the culture and livelihoods of local communities.

A powderblue surgeonfish swims by a dead coral reef off Vommuli Island, in the Dhaalu Atoll in the Maldives. The rise in sea temperatures in recent years has killed coral reefs globally at an alarming rate, destroying marine life and damaging natural coastal barriers -- leaving coastal population centers at risk as storms become more common and more violent. The loss of coral reefs may cost $1 trillion globally, according to an Australian study, including the loss of millions of travelers and hundreds of thousands of tourism industry jobs worldwide. Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing, also known as IUU fishing, robs the world’s oceans of 26 million tonnes of seafood annually, bringing financial losses to a staggering US$ 23 billion a year. The Port State Measures Agreement brokered by @UNFAO not only presents a great strategy to stop illegal fishing, but it also gives processors and retailers another way to track their supplies and acquire fish that only comes through ports legally. For consumers, the treaty ensures that we buy seafood that was legally caught. ©FAO / 📷: Luciano Simonelli

#Regram #RG @paulnicklen: A massive male polar bear exits the sea and climbs an iceberg near Svalbard, Norway. We were in a small zodiac boat cruising through the ice and accidentally surprised this big male who was out hunting for bearded seals. In one motion, he effortlessly pulled his approximately 800 pound mass out of the water leaving a small waterfall running down the ice. I am always humbled by their power and grace. I apologized for the surprise encounter and left him to his hunt which requires stealth, patience and strategy. He was not going to catch a seal with us in his icy domain. In 2014, thanks to a binational agreement between the US and Mexico, a river of sand became wet once again, and a fiesta ignited downstream. While the celebration only lasted a few weeks, it left something behind—hope. Over eight weeks of the “pulse flow,” the Colorado River showed us all that even with a relative trickle, we can bring a river back to life if we try.
