Nigeria! Constantly receiving the 'L' since 1960!
6 MPs of Nigerian descent were recently elected into the UK parliament. In government's usual fashion of playing to the gallery and reaping where we didn't sow, we sent them congratulatory messages. One of them (Chi Onwurah) has come out now to say she isn't Nigerian but British. A slap to our faces, if you ask me.
Whereas there are Nigerians who are achieving feats all over the world and flying our flag proudly as well, who just like home grown highflyers receive little or no recognition or support from the nation.
Remember the recent story of the pepper seller who turned out to be the first black female PHD holder from her Canadian university, Adeola? Yes Canada Broadcasting Corporation radio just listed her in the top 5 black women making Canada better. They are celebrating our own. She didn't have to bribe or lobby any press or government official for recognition. When she got her PhD, she immediately identified with Nigeria and Mokola, Ibadan in particular. She even expressed willingness to work with anyone at home sharing her vision for science, technological, engineering and mathematical advancement in Nigeria. A serious nation would have contacted young people like her and other highflyers home and abroad to explore ways of pulling this country from our technological doldrums. Yet we engage in PR stunts, sending messages to people who through no fault of theirs don't remember we exist. I even heard one of these Facebook groups had their admin take down her inspiring post. Now this is us, the masses not the government.
Shoutout to the blogs and media outfits who talk about Nigerians doing great things.
Are the Canadians and other countries appreciating us more than we do ourselves? Not exactly! They just encourage us for the betterment of their societies, even if the highflyer is holed up somewhere in Iseyin!

From the days of skipping meals and doing odd jobs to save money for bus fares to do the "music hustle" to this very day, my passion stays the same. Never think it isn't possible. Everything is!
