Did you know that the Kermode bear is also known as the “spirit bear”? This rare subspecies of the American black bear lives in the Central and North Coast regions of British Columbia, Canada. Their color is due to a double recessive gene unique in the subspecies. They are not albinos and not any more related to polar bears or the “blonde” brown bears of Alaska than other members of their species. Sometimes, a mother black bear can have a white cub. September is National Honey Month in the United States. Did you know that sealed honey doesn’t spoil even after thousands of years because most microorganisms do not grow in honey? Honey use and production have a long and varied history as an ancient activity, depicted in Valencia, Spain by a cave painting of humans foraging for honey at least 8,000 years ago. Humpback whales are powerful swimmers. They use their massive tail fin, called a fluke, to propel themselves through the water and sometimes completely out of it. Scientists aren’t sure if this breaching behavior serves some purpose, such as cleaning pests from the whale’s skin, or whether whales simply do it for fun.
