Grab your walking shoes and get ready for Washington, DC’s best public tour program featuring more than 50 guided walking tours in neighborhoods throughout the District. This annual event which runs from September 16-24 this year, introduces guests to the art, culture, and history of Washington, DC through a series of “bite-size” lunchtime tours, after-work “happy hour” tours, and longer weekend tours.
Tours are led by historians, licensed tour guides, community leaders and business owners, enthusiasts and docents, who all donate their time and expertise for this annual festival.Tours are offered at varying lengths and fitness levels, so it is easy to find a tour that is right for you. All tours require reservations and are free and open to the public. Several tours are wheelchair and stroller accessible.

I spent a few days on my own in Marrakech before meeting up with my tour group back in Casablanca. I stayed in the medina at Riad Malika.

Like all guesthouses (most of them former family homes) Malika doesn’t look like all that much from the outside (the entry is under the sign) but inside is another thing altogether. The outer walls surround open courtyards, generally planted with lush tropical vegetation. Fountains and plunge pools are within or just outside the central area. There are several public rooms – some cozy, some open where you can read or have breakfast or dinner served. All of the guest rooms have windows looking into the courtyard.

I had requested a small suite, as I wanted a fireplace – November can be chilly here and there’s no central heating. My “room” was two levels and included a “secret” set of stairs to the rooftop terraces. I also had a small balcony on the second level and a small terrace outside my entry door.
